6 STEPS TO GETTING THE PERFECT SALON BLOW DRY AT HOME

6 STEPS TO GETTING THE PERFECT SALON BLOW DRY AT HOME

There’s nothing better than a super sleek, perfected blow dry - especially when it’s free! Obviously we’d love to go to the salon every three days and pay for someone to wash and expertly dry our hair but unfortunately our last name isn’t Kardashian. Getting a perfect blow dry at home is actually pretty easy though, you just need to follow our quick tips and get some practice in!
Step 1 - Prep
It’s really important that your hair is in the best condition possible as blow drying requires a lot of heat. Washing with a shampoo and conditioner that work with your hair type is super important and will keep your tresses looking their best. It’s also worth using a hair mask to super charge and replenish your strands before you start too.
Step 2 - Let your hair dry naturally
Probably not the step you thought would come next but it’s so important that you don’t start blow drying straight out of the shower. You want your hair to be 60-80% dry when you start, this will help to minimise heat damage and stop your hair from going super frizzy later on.
Step 3 - Add product
It goes without saying that if you’re using any heat styling tools you need to protect your hair. We recommend applying the Tigi S Factor Heat Defender to your damp locks for a shiny, damage free finish. If you want a super voluminous blowout you can add some root lifting moose at this stage too which will give your hair an extra boost.
Step 4 - Decide the finish you want
Decide if you want a super sleek and straight finish or a bouncy full volume curl. These looks require two different techniques so you’ll need to get prepped for whichever one you choose. If you want a straight finish use a paddle brush and for a classic blow dry use a round brush. Also if you’re going for the classic you can use velcro rollers to hold each section in place as it cools giving you a more defined curl.
Step 5 - The main event
You’ll want to start by working your hair into sections, from the nape of your neck upwards so it’s easier to work with. Attach the concentrator nozzle to your hair dryer and blow down the hair shaft to smooth the hair cuticles and give you that super shiny finish. It’s important to keep the hair dryer about 6-8 inches away to help prevent damage and stop the brush from heating up too much.
For a classic bouncy blowdry - If you want to create maximum volume it’s important to blow the hair in the opposite direction to where it naturally falls. Start by using the round brush to lift the hair at the root, blowing underneath the hair for maximum volume. After drying the roots pull the brush down the lengths of your hair rolling the ends for super smooth bouncy curls.
For for a smooth, straight finish - Use your large panel brush to comb through the lengths and follow with the hairdryer. This will really smooth out the hair and give you straight strands while still being super shiny.
If you have a fringe - Unlike the rest of your hair blow drying your fringe or face shaping layers in the opposite direction won’t give you quite such a flattering finish. You want to blow dry these sections forward, over your face to get the best finish. Use a round brush to curve the ends too depending on how you’d like the hair to sit.
Step 6 - Aftercare
To prolong your blowdry sleep with your hair in a loose high bun secured with one clip so you don’t get any kinks. This will help your hair to hold its volume and curl for longer and you can just shake it out in the morning for instant perfection. You may want to make the switch to a silk pillowcase too, you can read about the benefits of these in our blog post here. Lastly use a dry shampoo in between washes to keep your roots looking fresh as well as adding volume.
